It's not like the illegal ones can just grow like mushrooms. From what I am reading they are even more relentless in the area around Linz which is the 3rd biggest city of Austria.

One of my friends from Hungary visited me. He traveled with train and police officers and soldiers appeared on the train right after they crossed the border, at the first train station. He will be asked not to nicely to present the ID card but he accidentally presented the driving licence. In Hungary both documents are okay for ID verification. So he showed his driving licence and was almost kicked down from the train. And he was from a EU country. Police officers are crazy sometimes.

This is the same in all EU countries. The police have too much tasks and they are often angry. In many cases, without any real reason. But your friend also made a mistake, for crossing borders you should have a passport or ID card at least. I understood that he showed the wrong card accidentally, and it did not entitle the officers to be harsh.
